Coach: Make it Fun!

Parent teaching and coaching teenage student driver

Use Positive Re-inforcement!

Gently Correct- don't scold. Remember, the student is trying to improve. S/he's not out to deliberately anger the coach.

Use humor- relieve the tension. Learning to drive is stressful!

Praise- "Wow, you're really improving" "You handled that nicely"

End the lesson on a hopeful, up note- "Your lane position was better. Next time we'll give you more challenge"

In-Car Guidelines:

  • Always wear safety belts.
  • Always use turn signals.
  • Always have student brake early.
  • Student and coach keep eyes on road.
  • Calmly talk student through situations.
  • Tell, "Go straight unless told otherwise."
  • Look far ahead, and exercise caution.
  • Stop when referring to reference material.
